Is It Safe to Leave a Campfire Burning Overnight?

Is It Safe to Leave a Campfire Burning Overnight?

You’ve had a good night. The fire’s still glowing, your tent is set, and your body says sleep.
The flames are low… so do you just walk away?

The short answer: no.
It’s never safe or responsible to leave a campfire burning overnight.

Here’s why - and what you should do instead to stay safe, legal, and respectful of the wild.

Why You Should Never Leave a Campfire Unattended

Even if it seems like the fire is dying down, embers can stay hot for hours.
One gust of wind, one falling branch, and suddenly those embers can reignite flames and start a wildfire.

Here’s what’s at risk:

  • Your life and safety
  • Other campers nearby
  • Wildlife, trees, and land
  • Legal consequences - many parks and forests strictly ban unattended fires

Fires don’t have to look dangerous to be dangerous. Even a small pile of coals can spread flames if left unmanaged.

How to Properly Extinguish a Campfire Before Sleeping

Before you zip into your sleeping bag, make sure your fire is dead out.
That means cold to the touch - not just low flame.

Step-by-step:

  • Let the fire burn down naturally if possible
  • Pour water slowly on all coals, not just the center
  • Stir the ashes with a stick or shovel
  • Pour more water until you hear no hissing
  • Check for heat by holding your hand near the coals (don’t touch)
  • Repeat if needed - it should be cool, gray, and lifeless

No water? Use dirt or sand, but be thorough and stir well. Never just bury hot coals.

What Happens if You Don’t?

  • Fires can relight from hot coals
  • Wind can blow sparks into dry brush
  • Wildlife can knock something into the fire ring
  • You could face fines or bans if rangers find an active fire without supervision

Wildfires are real and most are started by careless campfires.
